Tarasenko History

2008-09: Vladimir Tarasenko an excellent rookie season in the KHL with seven goals and ten points. The young right winger started getting into Sibir Novosibirsk’s rotation and his role grew as the season went on. Tarasenko played a key role in Team Russia 91 national team and was the team’s top scorer or second top scorers in most of the international tournaments. He played first line hockey at the WJC U18 and with seven goals and 15 points he was the tournament’s second top scorer and one of the forwards in the All-Star team. Team Russia clinched a silver medal after losing the finals to team USA.

2009-10: Tarasenko’s role has dramatically increased this season and he was a regular player in the team’s top lines, being one of the best performers of Sibir Novosibirsk. Tarasenko increased his point production to 13 goals and 24 points (same numbers as Ovechkin in his draft year) and his playing time to more than twelve minutes per game. In December Tarasenko scored four goals in six games at the WJC. At the end of the season he participated in the training camp for the WC with Russian senior national team, skating in one stage of the Euro Hockey Tour, but without making the cut.

Tarasenko Talent Analysis

Vladimir Tarasenko is a forward who likes to play the off wing. He is a classical Russian winger, with plenty of talent and a very good touch around the net. While being firstly a goal scorer, he can also pass the puck rather well and reads efficiently the ice. He has no obvious holes in his game as he is very good competitor and possesses an amount of grit that might allow him to play even in a checking line role, also because of his decent size. He showed that he is willing to play hard on the corner and to get down to block shots, but he has to learn how to use his size at his advantage. His excellent shot makes of him an big threat on ice, both because of its accuracy and its quick release. Skating, deking and technique are his main feats, he’s a first line kind of player for the future.

Tarasenko Future

Tarasenko has all the tools to become a star. He is a premium talent with a touch of grit, necessary to play the more demanding North American game, who can put the biscuit in the basket night in, night out. He is one of the best players available for the 2010 NHL Draft, but his recent statements about a further year in the KHL might be cause of concern among more than one team.

Quotes

There is no team that I'd really like to draft me. My dream is to play in the NHL, that's all.

I'm more than 18 years old but I still wear a cage because I had an injury and now doctors forbid me to play without it.
