History

2008-09: Sergei Barbashev was a Team Russia 92 regular since its establishment and in all tournaments he was among the top scorers of the team. He skated in the Russian First League with CSKA junior farm team and, internationally, in the World Under-17 Challenge, in which he gave 7 assists in 5 games.

2009-10: Barbashev was a key member of CSKA junior team in the newly formed MHL. With team Russia 92 he skated in the World Junior A Challenge in November (three goals and three assists in four games) and at the U18s in Belarus, where he was one of the top three players on the team.

Talent Analysis

Sergei Barbashev is a smart forward gifted with a great hockey IQ and very good technique. He’s a very versatile player as he can either score or give the last pass and thus he can adapt himself in playing different style. He can be an effective sniper or a playmaker and this versatility will be very useful for his career. He doesn’t have a great shot, but his excellent scoring sense and smartness give him many chances to get on the score sheet. He is a very fast skater too. His downsides are his small frame and his defensive play. He uses his excellent speed to get back in the zone, but he needs to improve his awareness.

Future

Even if he is a very talented player, Barbashev is definitely not yet ready for pro hockey, especially due to his physic. He needs to bulk up if he is serious about his future career. He doesn’t have superstar potential, but he can turn out as a regular NHL player especially if he fixes his obvious issues.
