History

2008-09: Pashnin was one of the surprises of the season as he came almost out of nowhere to the WJC squad thanks to a strong performance in the Russian second tier league. Sergei Nemchinov bet on him and it paid off. At the end of the season he was draft in both NHL and KHL drafts.

2009-10: Pashnin played his first KHL year with CSKA Moscow scoring five points in 44 games. He improved a lot his game, being more aggressive, more physical and also adding some technique to his game. At the end of the season he earned a call for the Rangers' rookie camp

Talent Analysis

Mikhail Pashnin is a physical defenseman who plays hard along the boards and in the corner. He's a tough player and likes playing a hard nose style of hockey. Pashnin is definitely not scared by the traffic and he can contain the opposition forwards with his backchecking abilities. He doesn't have tons of offensive skills, but he's one of such players who can be paired with an offensive defenseman to back him up and form a solid back line. Pashnin is a good skater, he's not a speedster, but won't get outskated with ease. He's not overly big at 5'11", 187 lbs, but is strong and can take physical play from the opposition. Definitely a very good, interesting prospect, but he needs to work a bit on avoiding racking up big PIMs.

Future

Pashnin has expressed a lot of interest in the NHL and has all the tools to become an NHL player due to his physical play and defensive coverage. He's going to play at least another one or two seasons in the KHL to honor his contract with CSKA Moscow and to earn some needed experience before crossing the pond.
