History:
2006-07: Maxim Trunev started making a name for himself in North America as his Severstal Cherepovets junior team won a McDonald's Midget tournament, with Trunev himself scoring a hat-trick during the final game against a team from Vancouver. He was also named in the tournament's first All-Star team. He was a core member of Severstal's junior farm team in the Russian first league.
2007-08: Trunev skated in his first RSL game with Severstal Cherepovets. Later in the season he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL Entry Draft and the Portland Winter Hawks of the WHL, but opted to keep playing at home.
2008-09: Maxim Trunev had a decent season in the KHL with Severstal, scoring four goals in 35 regular season games.
2009-10: Trunev didn't repeat 2008-09 success as he failed to get regular ice time with the team. However, in 30 games he managed to net three goals. He was a force for Severstal's junior team in the MHL with 24 points in 10 games, but it wasn't enough to make Almaz a top-end team in the playoffs. He also skated at the WJC, scoring four points in six games.
Talent analysis
Maxim Trunev is a natural goalscorer with plenty of speed. Trunev is an extremely gifted skater with excellent acceleration. He makes thing happen using his speed to skate past defensemen and bring himself deep in the zone to get a pass. He doesn't have great shooting abilities, but he can score thanks to his good instincts. The forward plays well the puck, is a good puckbringer and can try some trick in the offensive zone. Trunev sometimes plays away from the physical contact and thus he needs to improve in this area, as well as in the defensive play. Trunev also lacks of serious playoffs experience.
Future
At this point it's hard to predict if Trunev is going to be a legit prospect for the Habs. He didn't show many progresses in the past two seasons also due to the limited ice time. Trunev might need a change of scenario in order to focus on his progress and get some quality ice time.
