History
2006-07: Kirill Petrov started playing pro hockey with Ak Bars Kazan. Before of achieving that he played in many regional tournaments and international tournaments with Russia-90 national team. He scored his first pro goal and was selected as underager to play in the U18 WJC, winning the gold medal.
2007-08: Kirill Petrov played the whole season with Ak Bars in the RSL, scoring ten points in his first full pro year. He kept his good play with Russia-90 and also helped the team grabbing a silver medal at the U18 WJC. At the end of the season he was drafted in the NHL by the New York Islanders, during the third round.
2008-09: Kirill Petrov started the season with a bad shoulder injury that influenced his whole season. He was named to the U20 team Russia for the 2009 WJC, but left the crowd and the scouts disappointed as he had no game practice and finished the tournament with zero points. This wasn't a good season for Petrov as he played a mere six games in the Russian top league.
2009-10: Once again Petrov had little ice time with stacked Ak Bars Kazan, and also this season was reassigned down to the Russian first league. Petrov was one of the leaders of Team Russia during the 2010 WJC, one of the worst ones for Russia in the latest few years. He was named captain after head coach Plyuschev decided to exclude Filatov from the role. At the end of the season he skated in New York Islanders' development camp, but didn't report to the NHL and staied in Russia.
Talent Analysis
Kirill Petrov is a talented winger with good size. While he's not a power forward, he adds some size to his game and this is definitely something interesting. Petrov has a very good set of hands and this let him play the puck a lot and getting some good scoring chances. Petrov is also a fast skater with a very good technique. He should work on his passing play as he doesn't always take the best decisions when he has to pass, but this is something that he can work on. He isn't scared by the physical play, but he isn't a physical player and needs to learn how to take advantage of his good frame. Kirill Petrov is a very interesting prospects with NHL body and a high level of skill.Future
Petrov never denied his interest in playing for the Islanders, but had some hard time in walking away from his contract. Recently he was traded from Ak Bars Kazan to Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk and this might help him in reporting sooner. Maybe we will be able to see Petrov in America already on 2011 summer.Petrov Watch
